CAROLINA & DAYANA
A Story of Unconditional Love in the Midst of Adversity
Carolina is a young woman living with severe physical disability, muscular atrophy, and cerebral palsy. Today, her condition prevents her from moving any part of her body, and she depends entirely on the constant care of her family.
However, her life was not always this way. During her early childhood, Carolina developed normally, but around the age of five she began experiencing serious health complications that profoundly and permanently changed her life. Since then, her family has walked a path filled with medical, emotional, and financial challenges.
By her side is her 16-year-old sister, Dayana, who has become a fundamental source of support in her care. Yet Dayana has also faced her own battles. She is currently going through a period of depression and self-harming behaviors, in addition to having been a victim of abuse and harassment by her former partner, who is currently awaiting trial for physical assault against her. As a result of this violence, she also suffered a knee injury.
Through the Steps of Hope – Pasos de Esperanza Foundation, we have supported this family with comprehensive care during an especially difficult time. For Carolina, we provided an orthopedic bed to improve her comfort and quality of life, along with essential food and medications, as well as monthly grocery support for the household.
For Dayana, we recognize that healing is also a priority. She is currently receiving psychological therapy with Estefanía and attending physical therapy sessions at a specialized center in La Ceja to support her recovery. We firmly believe that mental and emotional health are just as important as physical well-being.
Although there are no further medical treatments available to reverse Carolina’s condition, there is something deeply powerful that remains: dignity, compassion, and constant support. Our mission is to ensure that both she and her family receive the care and accompaniment they need to live with greater comfort, stability, and hope.
Carolina and Dayana’s story reminds us that even when we cannot change a diagnosis, we can change the way a family walks through the journey. And that, too, transforms lives.
